General Information
A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is a special license required to operate large or heavy vehicles, including trucks, buses, and other commercial vehicles. In Washington state, there are different classes of CDLs (A, B, and C) depending on the vehicle type and cargo. Each class has specific training and testing requirements.
Class A CDLs allow you to operate any combination of vehicles with a gross combination weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 pounds or more, provided the vehicle being towed is heavier than 10,000 pounds. Class B CDLs cover single vehicles with a GCWR of 26,001 pounds or more or towing a vehicle not heavier than 10,000 pounds. Class C CDLs are for vehicles designed to transport 16 or more passengers (including the driver) or hazardous materials.
Endorsements for a CDL include passenger (P), school bus (S), hazardous materials (H), tank vehicle (N), doubles/triples (T), and air brake restriction removal (L). Each endorsement requires additional testing and training.
